For the last few weeks we have been thinking about our community and about getting to know each other better. In our last week before Lent starts we are going to look at getting to know ourselves a bit better so that we can be proud of the people God made us to be. We make the body of Christ not by being the same but by being different and then bringing those bringing those differences together. Where one of us is weak, another of us is strong and so only together can we build a community.

Monday

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

St Paul wrote in his letter to the Galatians that we should try not to compare ourselves with others but instead take pride in the things we do well. Have a read of this passage from chapter 6:

6 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. 4 Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, 5 for each one should carry their own load.

The big questions to discuss in form time today is this:

Why do we compare ourselves with other people?

How easy do you find it to be proud of something you’ve done?

Morning Prayer: Lord, Help us to carry our own burdens and take pride in ourselves. Amen.

Prayer at the end of the day:

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

What have you done today that you’re proud of?

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.

Tuesday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross

I saw this video for the first time about 10 years ago and it still amazes me that no-one watching can see what’s happening. But then sometimes you need everything to be turned upside down to see things for what they really are. We are going to get a bit arty later on in the week and do some portraits of our own but for now our prayer this morning is a simple one.

How can we be the face of Jesus to other people? Think for a moment as your watching this as to how you can be like Jesus for someone when their world is being turned upside down.

Morning Prayer: Lord, help us to be the face of Jesus to others in our community. Amen.

Prayer at the end of the day

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

Have you seen God in anyone today?

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.

Wednesday

We start with the sign of the Cross.

To play your part in the community you need to believe that you’re amazing  – just the way you are. One of my favourite things to happen this week was last Thursday during the “Jam” session in the chapel where we ended up recreating the clip above with about 40 people! (By the way come back tomorrow lunch time to carry on with this!) It only worked however because people played their part and stuck to it and did it to the best of their ability. We struggled at times because everyone wanted to sing the vocal line!

How  we are with each other is alot like that sometimes. We forget that sometimes playing our part in the background is more important than taking centre stage. We forget that to come together as a group (Like the Bellas did in the clip) we all need to play our different parts!

Morning Prayer: Lord, help us to play our part in our community. Amen.

Prayer at the end of the day:

We start with the sign of the cross.

How have you played your part today?

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.

Thursday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross

If you didn’t see the video from Tuesday it might be good for some inspiration!

Today we’re going to celebrate the individual members of your form and show just how important each person is to making up your community. You will need enough credit card sized pieces of paper and pens for everybody in the class and your job this morning is to paint a portrait of the person you sit next to! Take these portraits and stick them in your window so as you go round school today you can see just how many amazing individuals make up our community.

If you need some music to paint to then try this (I’m aware that a lot of you won’t get it but those older members of our community should appreciate the reference!)

Morning Prayer: Lord, help us celebrate every individual in our community. Amen.

Prayer at the end of the day

How have you been an individual today?

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.

Friday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross

I’m a massive fan of Jessie J, mainly because she is such a great lyricist. She even wrote “Party in the USA” for Miley Cyrus. OK, bad example, but these lyrics are absolutely beautiful and really help us think about who we are.

As Friday is all about having a good read, read these lines together.

I stare at my reflection in the mirror:
“Why am I doing this to myself?”
Losing my mind on a tiny error,
I nearly left the real me on the shelf.
No, no, no, no, no…

Don’t lose who you are in the blur of the stars!
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It’s okay not to be okay.
Sometimes it’s hard to follow your heart.
Tears don’t mean you’re losing, everybody’s bruising,
Just be true to who you are!

Brushing my hair, do I look perfect?
I forgot what to do to fit the mold, yeah!
The more I try the less it’s working, yeah
‘Cause everything inside me screams
No, no, no, no, no…

Don’t lose who you are in the blur of the stars!
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It’s okay not to be okay.
Sometimes it’s hard to follow your heart.
But tears don’t mean you’re losing, everybody’s bruising,
There’s nothing wrong with who you are!

Yes, no’s, egos, fake shows, like WHOA!
Just go, and leave me alone!
Real talk, real life, good love, goodnight,
With a smile, that’s my home!
That’s my home, no…

No, no, no, no, no…
Don’t lose who you are in the blur of the stars!
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It’s okay not to be okay…
Sometimes it’s hard to follow your heart.
Tears don’t mean you’re losing, everybody’s bruising,
Just be true to who you are!
Yeah yeah yeah

Have a read of this and try to write what you think this is telling us in one line in the comments section below.

Morning Prayer: Lord, help us to be the person you made us to be. Amen.

Prayer at the end of the day

Have you been yourself today?

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.
