Well the first week is over and we’ve made a great start to the new year. In the Gospel this weekend we hear about the Baptism of Jesus – a hugely important event. One of the most interesting parts of the account is when we hear about Go’s voice coming from the heavens. There are only a few times in scripture when God actually and literally speaks out loud to people, but many more times when God communicates in different ways. Just like the people in the bible, we have to realise that God can speak to us in many different ways – we just have to listen. Which brings us to the theme of the week – listening!

Monday

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

In St Paul’s letter to Timothy we hear how he is pleased that people are listening to him! Ask someone to read this out loud.

“And we also thank God constantly for this,
that when you received the word of God,
which you heard from us,
you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is,
the word of God, which is at work in you believers.”

Talk about the following question then see if you can listen to each others answers!

How does it feel when someone does not listen to you – why does it feel like that?

Listening is alot more than taking in information, it can actually be an act of love. We listen to those people we care about and so simply by listening to what people say we can show love for them and help them feel good! Try it today!

Morning Prayer: Lord, help us to listen to those around us. Amen.

Prayer at the end of the day:

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

Think about the most exciting thing you have heard today.

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.

Tuesday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross

Name that sound was a popular segment on Sesame Street – Back in the day! Your task this morning is to play your very own game of Name that sound. Find 3 volunteers, ask them to find an object in their bag that makes a sound then take it in turns to come up at the front and make their sound whilst everybody else closes their eyes. See if you can “Name that sound!”

But what’s the point of all that!? This game helps us understand that it can be difficult to recognise what were hearing sometimes – just like in life. Our friend might say “I’m fine thanks” but we need to hear if they are really saying “I’m having a bad day.”

Think for a moment about how we could listen more closely to the important things in life.

Morning Prayer: Lord, help us hear the needs of our world. Amen.

Prayer at the end of the day

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

What did you hear to day by listening carefully?

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.

Wednesday

We start with the sign of the Cross.

This video has been seen over 2 million times and started off as an impromptu film project by Tyler Cullen. He simply wanted to know what people were listening to. It’s been replicated in over 15 different cities world wide.

It’s easier than ever for us to listen to our music, and its even easier to put on our headphones and shut out the rest of the world! Do you think that we miss something by putting in our headphones or do you think we get a chance to listen to something that means something to us?

What was the last song you listened to on your headphones? Why?

If Jesus was stopped on he street with his headphones in, what song would he be listening to? Put you answer on a piece of paper and stick it on your door and see what songs Jesus would have on his iPod throughout the day! If you get chance also put on your piece of paper why you think Jesus would listen to this song!

Morning Prayer: Lord, help us to hear your voice in our world. Amen.

Prayer at the end of the day:

We start with the sign of the cross.

What have you heard to day that could be God speaking to the world – or you!?

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.

Thursday / Friday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross

This week we have the House Act’s of Worship on either Thursday or Friday, because of this the corridors are going to be a little bit quieter as half the school will be out of their form rooms. With this in mind we are going to try something a bit different!

It’s amazing just how much sound we have to get through just to listen to the people around us – but sometimes what we need is a chance to listen to ourselves. What we are going to do will sound really easy but trust me, it is not!

We are going to try and stay silent for 3 minutes.

In that silence a few things will happen. Firstly you will hear the sounds of the school and probably hear sounds that are there every morning but you’ve not noticed before. The sound of the fan on the computer the sound of the water in the radiators etc. But after that has passed you might be able to listen to your thoughts and maybe even your prayers. Be honest with yourself what do you need to tell yourself at the moment – what or who do you need to pray for. Try the three minutes of silence challenge and then have a talk about what it was like!

Morning Prayer: Lord, help us to listen better to ourselves and listen better to you. Amen.

Prayer at the end of the day

Have you heard anything today that has really made you think/feel something?

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.
