Prayer Resources – Week 2

16983474_BG1This week Lent begins. It’s the start of our journey towards Easter. We’ve got Shrove Tuesday too and this week will help us understand and begin the season of Lent. We’ve also got our service of ashes and our forgiveness wall in the hall on Monday!

With that in mind our theme for the week is all about making yourself a better person. It’s also Careers week this week, another way in which we decide how we live our lives and another way in which we can explore what we are called to do by God.

Monday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross.

Ash Wednesday, has at it’s heart a theme of repentance and forgiveness. It reminds us that we have to make ourselves better people by seeking and giving forgivness during lent.

To help us understand this we are going to create a forgiveness wall in the hall today, which will in turn, help prepare us for our Service of Ashes on Wednesday.

Watch this to find out more!

Thy will be done,

Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

We finish with the Sign of the Cross.

Tuesday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross.

Today is Shrove Tuesday or “Pancake Day”. Traditionally it’s a time when we use up our luxuries in preparation for fasting!

Today, if you have time make a pancake for your class window (A paper one that is!) and write on it all the things as a form you are going to give up. That way it’ll be a reminder of what you have to look forward to after Lent is over!

Friday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross.

This is the Gospel Reading for Ash Wednesday. It’s the reason that Lent is 40 days long and it reminds us that Jesus too found it hard to go without things and stay true to God.

What does this story tell us about Jesus? What does it tell us we have to do to?

Matthew 4:1-11

New Revised Standard Version, Anglicised Catholic Edition (NRSVACE)

The Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’  But he answered, ‘It is written,

“One does not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”’

Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written,

“He will command his angels concerning you”,
and “On their hands they will bear you up,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.”’

Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”’

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour;9 and he said to him, ‘All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.’ 10 Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! for it is written,

“Worship the Lord your God,
and serve only him.”’

Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him

and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
