This week we enter into October – a month dedicated to the Holy Rosary. It’s a reminder that we can look to Mary not only as an example, but also as a friend who prays with us when we need her the most.

Think about who you want to pray for at the moment and maybe take some time this week to come to the Chapel and pray with Mary.

Notices

  • Every Monday in October there will be the opportunity to pray the rosary at lunchtimes in the Chapel so bring in your rosary beads or pop down and create some!
  • If you weren’t able to make your Chaplaincy Team interview on Friday then check the door of the Chapel on Monday to find out your interview time for this week!
  • Confirmations are taking place this year in Long Eaton Parish. If you are in Y8 or above then the next meeting is on Saturday 6th October. Get in touch with Christina for more details: https://www.beinspirational.co.uk/confirmations-in-long-eaton/
  • Y11s have until Thursday 25th October to complete their House board in the Chapel so get started soon!
  • The Geography House Competition deadline is Monday 8th October so make sure you submit your entries to the Geography department as soon as possible to be in with a chance of being published in The Becket School calendar!
  • We have Mass on Friday lunchtime as usual so pop to the Chapel to reserve your lunch for afterwards and to collect a Mass Pass.

Faith in Action Award!

Every year all students across the school have the opportunity to take part in the Faith in Action Award.

Just like the Duke of Edinburgh Award there are Bronze, Silver and Gold levels and there are various tasks to complete for the Award. The Faith in Action Award celebrates the many ways that you as young people live out your faith and are an inspirational example to others. This year, those who have completed the Award will be invited to attend a large Awards ceremony with other schools in the Diocese where their efforts will be celebrated with friends and family.

For those who wish to complete the Award between now and Easter it will involve:

  • 20 hours of service in school (anything from fundraisers to helping with Acts of Worship to volunteering to help younger years with their Literacy)
  • Hours of service outside of school
  • Theological Reflection Points which take place after school and help you to explore your Faith further
  • A journal which is completed as you go through the Award
  • A Final Project which brings everything together at the end of the Award

If you would like to be involved in the Award then see Marsha or Joe in the Chapel to sign up – it really is a fantastic experience and we hope that as many people as possible will take this opportunity to explore their faith!

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

Help us Lord to be open to new experiences and to be dedicated to finding ways to strengthen our relationship with you.

Amen.

We end by making the Sign of the Cross.

The rosary uses various prayers, repeated many times, to help us to focus and to pray.

During each decade (which is made up of 1 Our Father, 10 Hail Marys and 1 Glory Be) we are asked to reflect on the mysteries of our faith: the Glorious Mysteries, the Luminous Mysteries, the Joyful Mysteries and the Sorrowful Mysteries.

Sometimes these reflections may seem a bit distant or difficult to get our heads around so this video has some ideas of how we can still make praying the rosary a meaningful part of our prayer life.

Lord, help us to remember that whenever we speak you are listening and that every moment of prayer is a way of becoming closer to you.

Amen

At the start of this term our school became joined with 21 other schools as part of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Multi Academy Trust!

Our Lady of Lourdes has a special link to the Rosary because she asked a young girl called Bernadette to encourage others to pray the Rosary. Watch this video to find out more.

As Mr Carberry mentioned in our Word of the Week video, all 6th Formers have a chance to join us on our Pilgrimage to Lourdes in July 2019 where we will be able to visit the Grotto and many other amazing places in Lourdes.

Just as taking the time to pray the Rosary is a commitment so are the preparations to go on Pilgrimage. Take a few moments in silence to think about how you make an effort to be committed to your faith.

Could you do more?

Could you be braver and share what you do with others?

As always we take time in our week to listen to Sunday’s Gospel.

Spend some time thinking about what might be distracting you from your mission to be more like Christ and think about how you can tackle that today!
