LentIt’s the first week back of the new term and more importantly, the first full week of Lent! Lent is one of the most important times in the Church and it’s here to help us get ready for the most important celebration of the year – Easter!

There are 3 things we are all called to during Lent, all of which are designed to help us get closer to God and examine our own lives to make us better people. The 3 things are Prayer, Fasting and Alms Giving and these three things are going to be our prayer focus for the next three weeks.

This week however, we’re going to look at Lent as a whole to understand where it comes from and just what it can help us do.

They’ll be loads going on in school; rehearsals for the Easter Production, a special reconciliation week and cool activities going on in The Chapel. We will also be airing our new show – Word of the Week – every Monday. If you’re not in form time on a Monday (That’s Year 7,8 & 9 this week) make sure you catch up!

Why is Lent 40 days long? Why do we give up something? Why is everything purple! So many questions – but thankfully – there are a few answers too!

Have a talk with the person next to you about Lent. What are you going to do to make this time of year special?

Lord, help us to use Lent as a time to get closer to you.

The cool thing about Lent is there every day is a chance to do something positive. It might be to pray a little bit more, it might be to do something nice for someone else – it could also be going with out something to help focus your mind on what’s important.

The youth service up at The Briars are doing a special 40 day challenge with a new challenge every day to help you understand what lent is all about! Have a look at some of the last few days challenges and then click here to check out what today’s challenge is.

Can you do it?! Think about a challenge that you could get the forms to do and as a form put your suggestion in the box below. We will then turn these into challenge for the form time AoW’s during Lent.

Lord, help us to pray, fast and give to others this Lent. Amen.

ash-wednesdayFor our PSHCE this term are on a new topic – People’s rights and responsibilities. This is all about exploring the different freedoms that we have and also the things we are required to do as part of our country and our world. It’s also about exploring what a Christian is called to do in today’s world.

Use the Key Process of “Breaking News” to discuss the following story. It’s about the right to religious expression. Religious freedom is something we enjoy in this country but it is not the same all over the world.

Lourdes-5As you know, we are going to use the Scripture from this Sunday’s Gospel to reflect on every Friday. If you are in KS 3/4 You can use your planners to to help you understand the scripture.

Mark 8:31-38

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.’

He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’

KS 3 /4 – Have a read of the explanation in your planner and answer the questions with your friends.

Finish the morning by praying the prayer you find at the bottom of the page.

Lord, help us be proud of who we are and what we believe. Amen.
