We often give up things for Lent but fasting is not just about going without chocolate. Fasting is about going without something you don’t need in order to focus on the things you do. You might fast from watching TV or going on your phone and instead spend more time with your family and friends.

What can you give up for Lent that will help you understand the really important things in your life?

19th March is the solemnity of St Joseph, Spouse of Mary. Watch this video to find out more about this Saint:

Joseph gave up so much to follow the path that God had called him to and is a great example of fasting. When he found out about Mary’s pregnancy he planned to quietly divorce her from their engagement (so she wouldn’t get into trouble) but when he was visited in a dream by a messenger from God he obediently changed his plans. He gave up his reputation and, as we can see from Mary and Joseph’s arrival in Bethlehem, that may have meant giving up his family too but Joseph still was determined to follow God’s call.

Bishop Patrick has called us all to reflect on the theme of discipleship during this season of Lent. Just like the fishermen who left their nets to follow Jesus and to be one of his 12 disciples we are all asked to make sacrifices and to give things up so that we can be a better disciple.

Take some time to think about what your faith calls you to sacrifice and give up.

Could you follow St Joseph’s example and be ready to give up whatever it takes to follow God?

Fasting is tough but it doesn’t mean that we should shy away from it. In this clip Chris Pratt, a famous Hollywood actor explains how he was inspired to fast and to share his faith with others.

The video starts at 3:34 and you can stop the video at 6:50!

We don’t always think of following the example of Biblical characters in all aspects of our life but they can be inspiring in many ways.

Which Bible characters inspire you?

Are there pieces of scripture that inspire you to act or to behave in a certain way?

Lord, help us to be strong in our Lenten challenges and, by removing distractions from our life, may we become closer to you.

Amen

As always we take time in our week to listen to Sunday’s Gospel.
