This week our Word of the Week is Pentecost. The feast of Pentecost is very important in the Church, as it’s when the disciples are visited by the Holy Spirit and baptised in tongues of fire and wind! Take a look through the different resources that we have for you this week.

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

Today we start with a video that explains a bit more about what Pentecost is. It’s quite long, but really interesting!

We end by making the Sign of the Cross.

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

Today we’re going to have a look at the Pentecost story. Read the scripture then answer the questions beneath it in the comments below!

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place. Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak.

There were Jews living in Jerusalem, religious people who had come from every country in the world. When they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered. They were all excited because all of them heard the believers talking in their own languages.

The Word of the Lord (Thanks be to God)

How would you have felt being one of the disciples?

Do you think the disciples would have understood what was going on?

The Holy Spirit is often thought of as fire, and being shown and represented in tongues of flames burning. Today we have a great song for you called Burning In My Soul. It’s a great one to have a listen to, and you’ll be able to learn the song and the actions with Issie!

Pentecost Reflection

Take yourself to a quiet place, maybe in your room, in the garden, where you feel relaxed.

You might want to put some quiet music on. Then slowly read this reflection, either in your head or out loud.  Imagining you are one of Jesus Disciples experiencing what happened to them on Pentecost.

Imagine you are in a small room with your friends, the disciples.

How does the room look, what is in it?

What can you smell? What can you hear while you sit there?

Who else is there with you? Are they… sad, frightened, worried for the future and what will happen to them? Do they maybe feel that they have let Jesus down?

Listen to what the people around you are saying. How are you feeling as you sit there?

Then suddenly you hear a loud noise, like a strong wind blowing through the whole house. You are now very afraid! Then the wind stops and there is a great sense of calm. The others are looking around wondering what will happen next.

Then you feel the presence of the Holy Spirit and with you. How do you feel? Excited, full of hope, full of awe because of Gods power?

You are filled with renewed faith, you now have the courage to spread Gods word.

How are you going to be a true witness? What can you do each day to bring the good news to those around you? How can you show love of God to others?

Bit by bit the room empties and finally you are there on your own, with your own thoughts.

You feel your breath start to slow down again.

You know you have a special job to do now. How will you spread the good news?

Good News!
When Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to his friends, the disciples he wanted them to have the courage to go out and spread the good news about Jesus and their faith.
Write a letter to someone who you do not go to school with, telling them all about the Pentecost story. This way you are being a modern day Disciple and spreading the good news. Put your letter in an envelope and either post the letter to the person or if they live near you post it through their letter box.
