On Friday 25th September and Wednesday 30th October, Year 7 had a special visit from some of the Briars team from NDCYS in their outreach gazebo!

Whilst we are unable to visit The Briars during this time it was brilliant to be able to invite the team to our community to explore our faith and relationships with one another. Even though it was a bit breezy outside, we still managed to have a fantastic time!

Throughout the morning we explored the theme of Service. Year 7 had the chance to think and reflect on the past few months and begin to look at how their idea of service and the examples of service they have seen have affected them.

We explored a piece of scripture from Matthew’s Gospel and reflected on the fact that when we serve others, we are serving the Lord.

‘When, Lord did we ever see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you a drink? When did we ever see you a stranger and welcome you in our homes, or naked and clothe you? When did we ever see you sick or in prison, and visit you?’ The king will reply, ‘I tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these followers of mine, you did it for me!’

Matthew 25:37-40

In the scripture, Jesus teaches us that when we are kind to the people in need, it is like being kind to Jesus. Jesus has a special love for the weary and so should we. We can show our love by sharing what we have with those in need.

From the session, we were reminded that we can serve others in really simple ways and still make a huge difference to people’s lives.

Service is something we are very passionate about as a school community. The Becket Way is based on the teachings of Jesus and are a reflection of the Gospel Values, specifically Jesus’ ‘Sermon on the Mount’ (Matthew 5:1-12), where Jesus gave several blessings, each beginning with the phrase “Blessed are the…”. Blessed is another word for Happy. Jesus teaches us how to be happy. Jesus refers to the values and qualities required to get to heaven. Serving others is one of the ways in which we can live fulfilled and happy lives.

Later on in the afternoon of Friday 25th September we served our wider community who live in Bunkpurugu by participating in a sponsored run for our school charity: Building Hope in Bunkpurugu.
