Our mission as Christians is to spread the word of God so how do we do it?

Our Music Resource will help us to think about how we spread the word through our actions that set an example of love whereas our Picture Resource gets us thinking about what messages we would send if we were using technology.

Our Action can get quite noisy or very quiet as we think about the way that we communicate the Word of God. This theme is continued in our Video Resource where you will have the chance to learn the alphabet in sign language so that you can spread the word in other ways.

Finally our Scripture Resource reminds us of the helper that we have to help us with our mission – the Holy Spirit.

Think about the message that you give through your words and actions and try to make sure that you are spreading a message of love in all that you do.

This week our theme is to spread the word!

Jesus always shared words of hope and peace and love. This song explains that we shouldn’t just say these words but we should live our lives in a way that spreads the word too!

What words and messages did Jesus give us that we should share with others?

How can we spread the word of God?

How do our actions spread the word of God? Think about how you treat others, what types of words you use and how you behave.

Please help us Lord to spread the word by showing what you have taught us through our words and actions.

Have a look at this picture, what do you see?

Lots of people have a mobile phone to make calls, send texts and write emails. They use them to communicate with others and to give messages.

If you had a mobile phone who do you think you would talk to?

If you were going to send a message about the Bible, what would you send?

If you were going to send a message about Jesus, what would you say?

If you were going to send a message to someone to make them feel happy who would you send it to and what would you say?

Sometimes a message is shared best by whispering, other times it is better to shout that message!

To make sure that we are prepared to spread the word, no matter whether it needs to be loud or quiet, we are going to play a game to practise these skills!

First, split into small groups of 7-9 people and sit in a circle.

Secondly, choose a good message to spread around the circle. Try to make it a message about faith so a sentence about Jesus or some words from the Bible.

Choose one person who will start to spread the message around the circle and get them to tell you which direction they want the message to go. This person must start by saying the message aloud very very quietly.

The person next to them must then say the message that the first person said but slightly louder than the volume they said it at. As you go around the circle each person should get a little bit louder than the last person until you are practising shouting your message nice and loud for all to hear!

You can go around the circle as many times as it needs to say the message at different volumes but remember, only say the message a little bit louder than the last person to say it! When you have shared one message try again with another message so that you can spread the word of God even further!

During our Action we thought about how we spread the word with our voices by making noise.

For some, the best way to spread the word is not by making noise but by using sign language.

Sign language is a way of communicating by using our hands to make signs.

Below is a video which shows the alphabet in sign language. The video is silent but you might like to say the letters as they appear on the screen to try to help you to remember the signs.

Watch the video and copy the signs.

After you have learnt the alphabet you could try signing: your name, a happy word, a message!

Help us Lord to use more than our voices when we spread the Word of God.

Help us to communicate with others clearly so that we share a message of love.

When Jesus ascended into heaven, body and soul He promised that a special helper would be sent to help the disciples to spread the word.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.

(Glory to you O Lord.)

“If you love me, you will obey my commandments.

“When I go, you will not be left all alone; I will come back to you.

The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you.

“Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.

The Gospel of the Lord.

(Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.)

(John 14: 15, 18, 26-27)

What are the commandments that Jesus is talking about? What has Jesus taught us to do?

How do you think the Holy Spirit helps us?

What does peace mean?

Do Jesus’ words about peace sound familiar? (Think about some of the words that a priest says)

How can we share and spread the peace that Jesus gave us?

Jesus taught us to love and to be at peace with one another and this is what we must do every day to be a true follower of Jesus.

To show that you will keep the peace that Jesus gave us share the sign of peace with the people around you. You can do a handshake, a fist bump, a high five or a hug! Remember to say the words “peace be with you” which are words that are found throughout the Bible.
