Discipleship – The Becket (10th-14th)

———————————————————————————————————

Our Word of the Week this week is

Discipleship!

It is the 1st week of Ordinary Time in the new Liturgical Year

Being a disciple means following a teacher or a way of life, it’s where we get the word discipline from. It reminds us that to follow Jesus we have to live like him and shape our lives in a way that reflects who he was and what he taught. This week we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus which marked the start of his active ministry. That ministry would go on to change the whole world and just like then, we are called to be disciples of Jesus today.

Leader/Young person: “Good morning, let us start our prayer by making the Sign of the Cross.”

All: “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.”

Yesterday we celebrated the Baptism of Jesus, we also celebrate the beginning of Christ’s public ministry which was
to continue for three years. Through our own Baptism we become followers of Christ, members of his family, his witnesses in the world and heirs to the kingdom of heaven. Here is a reminder of the some of the ways we can be modern day disciples, as well as some examples of disciples who inspire us!

Discuss and Comment in the comments box below:

  1. Chat as a form or to the person next to you, who do you think is a great example of a modern day disciple? Perhaps a family member, someone from your church, a member of staff or someone in the public eye.

2. If someone joined our school community and were looking for ways to become a disciple, what advice would you give them? What can you do in your everyday lives to be a disciple of Jesus?

Pope Francis Quote: “Being a disciple means being constantly ready to bring the love of Jesus to others, and this can happen unexpectedly and...”

Leader/Young person – “Let us bow our heads and pray together…”

Heavenly Father,

We thank you for giving us Jesus, our friend and teacher. We ask that we may be filled with the Holy Spirit and have the courage and wisdom to follow Jesus at school, on the street, with our friends, and when we journey from place to place so that others will be inspired by your love and compassion.

Amen.

As always we take time to listen to and reflect on Sunday’s Gospel. On Sunday we celebrated the Baptism of Jesus, and today Lorley, past Becket student, is going to read to us Sunday’s Gospel. Click on the video below…

What is the Gospel asking of us?

Have a show of hands in the room…Who here has been baptised?

Who has been to a baptism? What happens? What can you remember from your baptism or a baptism you have been to?

Baptism is a special gift which God has given only to us. When Jesus was baptised, he was showing us that he is
human just like you or me.

The Baptism of Jesus gives us an opportunity to renew the meaning of our own baptism as we live and work with others. Therefore, whenever we come to Church, be it on a Sunday or on attend Mass during the school week we gather as a family of Baptised, the family of Christ.

As we look around the room and look around our school, we can see various people involved in various ministries – spend a moment asking yourself now…

– Am I actively involved? Could I be actively involved? What could I do more to live out the mission of the school?

It is people’s involvement in their Church and schools that makes it active. Would you consider helping with the Catholic Life of the school and helping with Chaplaincy? Why not volunteer to read or lead prayer or visit the chapel and put yourself forward to help with the ethos of the school? This can be done in a variety of ways!

Leader/Young person – “Let us bow our heads and pray together…”

Dear Lord,

When Christ was baptised in the river Jordan the Holy Trinity was revealed to us and this marked the beginning of Jesus’ ministry.

May we be filled with the Holy Spirit and reveal the goodness of Christ to the people we meet, may we inspire and invite others to be followers of Christ and make it our mission to do more in the school community and build God’s kingdom here in this place.

Amen

Do this, Do that

As we learnt in this week’s AOW, being a disciple means following a teacher or a way of life, it’s where we get the word discipline from.

This morning we’re going to test how good you are at following instructions with a game of do this do that.

Nominate someone in your form to stand at the front of the class. This person will say ‘do this’ whilst giving you a number of actions to do e.g. putting your hands on your head, rubbing your tummy, dancing etc. When they say ‘do this’ with an action you follow their instruction, when they say ‘do that’ you don’t. It’s a bit like simon says. If you ‘do that’ and follow the instruction when you’re not meant to, you’re out. If you have time, change the person at the front leading the instructions and make your instructions more challenging!

Let us spend a moment thinking about those areas in our lives where we struggle to do the right thing.

Pause

What area in your life can you work harder at to be a better follower of Christ and example to others?

Pause

We ask for God’s strength and guidance, as we seek to be a better person today.

Lord, you are all-knowing and full of wisdom. Your plan is masterful. Help me as your disciple to follow you in every thought, word, and deed. Give me a heart of obedience and trust in you.

Amen
