Discipleship – 2021/22

Discipleship

Being a disciple means following a teacher or a way of life, it’s where we get the word discipline comes from. The word reminds us that to follow Jesus we have to live like him and shape our lives in a way that reflects who he was and what he taught. Jesus is constantly asking us to be his disciples, in and throughout our daily lives, in our school, our home, our parish, and our wider neighbourhood. As we become disciples ourselves, we can start to encourage more and more people to become disciples of Jesus.

Choose someone in your form to lead your prayer this morning. They should read anything in bold, and everyone else should join in on the other parts.

We begin our prayer with the Sign of the Cross. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Today we are going to change things up a bit and listen to a song.

As we are thinking of the word ‘Discipleship’ this week, discuss with the person next to you what you think of when you hear the word ‘disciple’.

The video below is a song called ‘I will follow’. While listening to it, take in the lyrics and think of the following questions

What does a disciple of Jesus look like?

Why is discipleship important?

How can you be more of a disciple?

This song teaches us how Jesus is the perfect example of how to be a disciple. To follow in Jesus’ footsteps is to be a disciple of Jesus himself.

If you have time why not watch this video from some of the Briars Team a few years ago. They talk all about discipleship whilst playing FIFA, and there’s a second part on the channel if you’re interested! Maybe with your friends you could spend time discussing discipleship and what it means whilst you’re playing FIFA or other games this week too!

Let us pray…

Lord Jesus Christ, we pray for the spirit of discipleship among us. We want to be Your followers who know You, Love You, Serve You, Praise and Glorify You. Amen

We end our prayer with the Sign of the Cross. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Today we are going to listen to the Gospel that was read on Sunday. Issie is going to talk a little about what it means, then discuss the questions below!

Discuss these questions with the person sitting next to you…

In the Gospel, the Holy Spirit is described as “like a dove”. What other things does the Holy Spirit present itself as?

What do you think it would have been like to watch Jesus get baptised?

What do you think is the most important thing about being a disciple of God?

Let us pray..

Lord, we need the life and grace that you alone can give. Open the heavens to us and pour out your Holy Spirit so that we may live as your beloved children; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen

We end our prayer with the Sign of the Cross. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

As we focus on the theme of discipleship this week, watch this video below that explains how discipleship works.

This video describes to us how us being disciples of Christ can help other people be disciples of Christ as well. Answer the following questions as a form.

What things, that Jesus did, can we do to be more like him and be more of a disciple of his?

How can we inspire others to become of disciple of Jesus?

Let us pray…

Lord, you are all-knowing and full of wisdom. Your plan is masterful. Help me as your disciple to follow you in every thought, word, and deed. Give me a heart of obedience and trust in you. Amen

We end our prayer with the Sign of the Cross. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
