MISSION STATEMENT CHALLENGES

———————————————————————————————————

Our Word of the Week this week is

LEADERSHIP

Some may think that they are not natural leaders. Some may think that they are better suited to be in the background or to be a small part of a big team. The truth is, by doing our small bit in the background or being front and centre of the team, we are all leaders to somebody. Somebody looks up to us for guidance and support, we may never meet this person, but we are always leading somebody in their life. That is what Jesus did for so many, He led people on a journey of goodness, hope, prayer, patience and love. That is how we need to lead others in our world today.

REFLECTION ACTIVITY

Is God’s Love Reckless?
Read it. Think about it. Discuss it.

Look at the controversy surrounding the use of the word ‘reckless’. God’s love is so many things for so many different people. If God’s love, in your view, is reckless, then that is a wonderful thing.

What was your emotional reaction to the words in the song?
Has the word ‘reckless’ deepened your understanding of God’s love for you?

If you could draw a picture about God’s love for you, what would it look like?

PRAYER

Father,

open my understanding to the reckless nature of Your love. Help me grasp and enjoy the wildness of Your love. Your indescribable love for me drove Jesus to the cross. Fill me with everything I need to respond back to You with reckless love. Your love for me pales against any other affection. Let my love for You do the same.

Amen.

A reading from the book of Psalms. (40:1-3)

“I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me and heard my cry … He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; many will see and fear and will trust in the Lord.

REFLECTION ACTIVITY

What Love Looks Like
Read it. Think about it. Discuss it.

Today, we look at our own weaknesses and pride in contrast with the unconditional agape love of God. Peter is a perfect metaphor for the way our good intentions don’t always match how we live life out every day.

However grievous your latest failure might be, run to Him in repentance and let His forgiveness wipe away all the shame you’re feeling. Instead of letting guilt keep you from His presence, run to Him so your gratitude born of His forgiveness will explode into praise. Believe me when I say that there’s no sound louder than a captive set free. So let the redeemed of the Lord say so!

In which ways do you identify with Peter, who denied knowing Jesus three times?
Have you ever surrendered all to God, only to blow it within the next hour?

What are some healthy ways in which you deal with a mistake?

PRAYER

Lord,

once again I come to You wit my head hung down. I can’t believe I did it again. Thank you, Lord, that just as You ask me to forgive people over and over, You do the same for me. I am truly grateful. now i join with Jeremiah in pleading for You to do in me what I cannot seem to do: “Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for You are my praise” (Jeremiah 17:14). I trust You with this. I receive Your forgiveness and I forgive myself. Thank You for Your agape love.

Amen.

A reading from the first letter of Saint Peter. (1:6-7)

“So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold – though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honour on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

REFLECTION ACTIVITY

Either He’s Good, or He Isn’t
Read it. Think about it. Discuss it.

I like the way Bill Johnson puts it: £God is good, and He is a perfect Father. His goodness is beyond our ability to comprehend, but not our ability to experience. Our hearts will take us where our heads can’t fit” God is truly good.

But perhaps you have had an experience that caused you to wrestle with God. Maybe you dug deep at that time and resolved it. Or maybe now is the time to do that.

You don’t need to fear coming to God with your honest feelings and questions. A faith that is tried is a stronger faith.

Think of an experience where you have struggled with God. How did you overcome it?
What helped you the most during this time?

How did coming out on the other side of this experience strengthen your relationship with God?

PRAYER

Father,

I know that You welcome me when I come to You with questions and a disturbed heart. Thank You that You invite me in and spend time with me to get Your truth i me. You are truly a good God, and through Your strengthening, I will see Your goodness in everything I experience. Thank You for the times when my faith has been through the fire and has come out as pure gold. I want nothing more than to please you.

Amen.

REFLECTION ACTIVITY

A New Lens
Read it. Think about it. Discuss it.

Have you encountered God’s love and kindness today? If you can’t see, feel, or believe that your Father is smiling over you, I’d like to suggest that you need an encounter with His kindness.

We won’t be able to fully trust God until we are utterly and unconditionally convinced of His kindness. Thanks be to God – He is more than eager to help us on this journey.

Close your eyes and picture your heavenly Father. Ask Him how He feels about you.
Is He smiling?
Where did His feelings of You come from?

Renew your mind and tell God how you feel about Him.

PRAYER

My Father,

I release any images of You that don’t match what Your Word says about You. As I continue this day, show me Your nature and character in the stories of the Bible. I choose today to believe that You are a good and kind God who loves me and likes being with me.

Amen.
