MISSION STATEMENT CHALLENGES

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Our Word of the Week this week is

CHARITY

Charity is something that we are all called to do. Something which is probably very easy and quick for us to do. But, for some reason, it is a simple choice which many of us choose to avoid or ignore. A simple, small act of charity can mean a great deal to another person. Charity does not need to be material items, charity can be giving up our time for somebody else who needs it the most. Donating our love to one another and sharing jokes and memories which bring a smile to somebody’s face. Charity, an easy and quick thing for us to do – then why don’t we do it all the time? We need to look deep into our hearts for that reason.

REFLECTION ACTIVITY

Why He Leaves the Ninety-Nine
Read it. Think about it. Discuss it.

Some days you are one of the ninety-nine, partying at the Shepherd’s house. On other days you are the lose one frantically wanting to be found. Either way, you have a responsibility. As on of the ninety-nine, it is to rejoice when a lost sheep is found. As a lost sheep, your responsibility is to keep watching for the Shepherd, because He is coming for you.

Have you ever been one of the ninety-nine?
Have you ever been the lost one?

What do you do to stay close to the Shepherd?

PRAYER

Father,

I remember what it was like to be lost. Fill me with compassion for those who feel that way today so I can be Your ambassador to them today. I want to rejoice with Heaven when they find You.

Through Christ our Lord,

Amen.

REFLECTION ACTIVITY

The Cost of the Cross (Part 1)
Read it. Think about it. Discuss it.

After you have heard the Crucifixion story a few times, it is easy to forget what Jesus really went through out of love for us.

How would you describe it?
How do you think Jesus was feeling?

How would you have felt?

PRAYER

Father,

it’s easy for me to take for granted what Jesus went through for me and for ll His lost sheep. The next time I take Holy Communion, help me remember this day when I prayerfully recalled what Jesus suffered so I wouldn’t have to be separated from You forever. As I take the Body of Christ and drink the Blood of Christ, remind me of this moment and receive it as worship.

Through Christ our Lord,

Amen.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. (26:7-13)
Glory to You, O Lord.

“A woman came with a jar of perfume. She had given much money for this. As Jesus ate, she poured the perfume on His head. When the followers saw it, they were angry. They said, “Why was this wasted? This perfume could have been sold for much money and given to poor people.”

Jesus knew what they were saying. He said to them, “Why are you giving this woman trouble? She has done a good thing to Me. You will have poor people with you all the time. But you will not have Me with you all the time. She puts this perfume on My body to make it ready for the grave. For sure, I tell you, wherever this Good News is preached in all the world, this woman will be remembered for what she has done.””

The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

REFLECTION ACTIVITY

The Cost of the Cross (Part 2)
Read it. Think about it. Discuss it.

What then is the proper response to the overwhelming gift of the cross? Simple. Come to the gift exchange with nothing but your heart – not your pretence, your best efforts, your strengths, or your gifts. All you need to bring is your heart wide open, surrendered, and laid bare before Him.

How does Mary’s response to Jesus challenge you?
What would your most valuable treasure be?

What would it take for you to remove that treasure from your heart and give it to Jesus?

PRAYER

Lord,

I feel almost speechless in response to Your sacrifice on the cross. I could never give a gift of that value back to You. But I do give what You ask – all of me. I give myself to the best of my ability and knowledge right now. I look forward to tomorrow, when I will be able to give even more.

Through Christ our Lord,

Amen.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. (13:3-5)
Glory to You, O Lord.

“Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself. then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet.

The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

Response

REFLECTION ACTIVITY

Loving With Reckless Abandon
Read it. Think about it. Discuss it.

They say that the value of something is based on what someone else is willing to pay for it. God could not have paid more for you than the price of His own Son, so you are priceless to God. Yet, despite your great value, you – and all of us – are called to humble ourselves and serve others. Because Jesus knew His value to God, He was able to serve in the lowest capacity at the last supper.

What does Jesus washing His disciples feet show?
How did it help Him show God to others?

How does it help you serve others better?

PRAYER

Father,

I want to freely serve as Jesus did. I know that He could surrender Himself completely because He knew His place in You, the value You placed on Him. Help me, Lord, to accept Your love and the value You give me so I can be so secure in my identity with You that I can serve others willingly.

Through Christ our Lord,

Amen.
