Creation – Welcome back Becket! (2nd and 3rd Sep)

———————————————————————————————————

Our Word of the Week this week is

CREATION

22nd week of Ordinary Time

The creation story starts with the words “In the beginning” and as we read on we find out how God brought everything into being. As we start our new year let’s think about what we can create – new ideas, new relationships and new ways of thinking. We also think at this time about the world we are trying to create for the future and how our actions affect not just the people but the environment around us as well. We are called to join together as a church to focus on creation over the next few weeks – what will you create?

WELCOME BACK!

Welcome back everyone, we hope you had a brilliant and restful break! There is always a mixture of emotions when we go back to school after a break, have a change in routine or even start at a new school! So remember to be kind to your peers and your staff, be welcoming and be there for the people who might be feeling nervous or who might be struggling.

If you haven’t already, spend one minute telling the person next to you something that you enjoyed doing over the summer break…maybe you watched a good series, read a good book, enjoyed the Olympics or were lucky enough to go on holiday! 1 minute starts now!

Leader/Young person: “Let us start our prayer by making the Sign of the Cross…”

All:In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.”

The word of the week is Creation

The creation story in the Book of Genesis starts with the words “In the beginning” and as we read on we find out how God brought everything into being. As we begin our new academic year let’s think about what we can create – a fresh and safe space for our tutor group, new ideas, new relationships and new ways of thinking.

A moment of reflection

Spend a moment to pause, close your eyes and think as we/I ask you some reflective questions…

  • What emotions have you felt today upon your return to school?
  • What is something you are looking forward to this year?
  • What do you think will be a challenge for you this year?
  • what do you think God might ask of you this year?

Now take a moment to think or pray about what you would like to create this year. Write down in your notes section in your planner for this day/week something that you hope for in the year ahead.

For example, you might hope to create new friendships, new ways of behaving in lessons, new ways of thinking and completing your work, new ways of exploring your faith, or new ways of getting involved with extra curricular activities!

Leader/Young person – “Let us Pray together…”

Loving God, as we gather together for this new academic year, we ask your blessing.

Help us to leave behind any troubles and difficulties from our last year or our summer break and help us to look ahead with a new hope.

Give us an appreciation for all the work our staff will do for us and help us to to work as best we can to grow in knowledge and maturity.

Help us to respect each other, look out for each other and, when challenges come, be by our side to support us through it all.

Amen.

“Now let us say our school prayer together…”

Leader/Young person: We end our prayer by making the Sign of the Cross.

All: In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Even birds and animals have much they could teach you;
ask the creatures of earth and sea for their wisdom.
All of them know that the Lord‘s hand made them.
10 It is God who directs the lives of his creatures;
everyone’s life is in his power.

The Season of Creation – We have just started the Season of Creation which runs from 1 September (World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation) to 4 October (the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron of the environment) each year.

This season is dedicated to prayer and action for the protection of creation. It is a time to renew our relationships with God and with all creation.

During this season of creation we may want to spend time giving thanks for all that God has made, repenting for the damage that we have caused and committing ourselves to take action to protect the earth our common home.

To find out a little more about the season of creation watch this 2 minute video below…

Discuss and comment below:

What are the things you can do in your everyday life to save energy and protect the planet?

What makes these things hard to do?

As a form group decide on a couple of realistic targets that you are all going make the effort to do in the season of creation to take action for our common home…let us know your targets in the comments below!

You could make a poster for the season of creation in your form groups and display your targets on your form prayer board as a reminder each day.

Leader/Young person – “Let us Pray together…”

Lord, as we live in a time of climate emergency help us to be more conscious of the way we live, how much energy we use, putting litter into the bin, using less plastic and how well we treat the environment.

We ask that you inspire all those working to save our world from this crisis, so that their efforts bear fruit.

Amen
